Buy with cash.

Of course paying cash isn’t likely to be a realistic option for major purchases like a home, a car, or maybe even a dishwasher. But for any purchase that isn’t a true necessity, make an effort to wait until you have been able to save up the cash before you make the purchase. You may find that the “cooling off” period between thinking you must have something and the time it takes to save for it makes you realize that you didn’t need it in the first place.
